2025 Simplot Inspirational Teacher of the Year Finalist Monique Gannon

Please join us in celebrating an outstanding educator!

We’re proud to announce that Monique Gannon, 2nd grade teacher at Wilcox Elementary School, has been named a finalist for the Simplot Inspirational Teacher of the Year!

This year, the Simplot Education Council received an incredible 2,617 nominations recognizing 402 exceptional teachers across Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25. Finalists will be spotlighted daily through Thursday, May 15, 2025.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, three Simplot Inspirational Teacher Awards will be announced—honoring one exceptional teacher each from the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each category features five finalists, all of whom will receive a $100 award, with the top recipient in each group earning a $500 prize from the Council.

Congratulations to Ms. Gannon on this well-deserved recognition!

“I would like to nominate Monique Gannon for the Teacher of the Year award. Mrs. Gannon teaches 2nd grade at Wilcox Elementary School. This is my second child to have had her as a teacher. I have been so impressed with the fun and innovative learning that goes on in her classroom. Every day she posts multiple pictures and videos of all the science experiments, group work, and hands-on activities throughout the day. I appreciate her communication with parents. I could message her any day or night and she will always respond promptly. I love that she holds kids accountable. She has the kids in charge of their homework to make sure it gets returned weekly. She highlights each child by giving them a chance to be "star of the week". Every day during the week the child gets to highlight something about themselves. One day it will be sharing a talent, another day it will be reading their favorite story to the class. Then the last day they get to pick 2 friends to have lunch with the teacher so she can get to know them more. She genuinely takes an interest in her student's lives. My son mentioned that he had baby lambs, and immediately she contacted me so I could send her pictures so she could share them with the class. Mrs. Gannon has brought my super shy son out of his shell and has given him confidence. She takes each child's weaknesses and helps them turn it into a strength. She celebrates their successes and improvements, no matter how small. She has been known to attend her student's extracurricular activities. All in all, she treats them like her own children. I don't believe Mrs. Gannon has any children of her own, but she acted as an extension of a motherly figure to these kids. They absolutely adore her. Monique Gannon deserves recognition, and I will continue to nominate her again and again.” Jennifer K. ~ Parent

April Attendance Matters Competition

In April, Wilcox's CRW, Kim Jackman created an attendance competition to help increase the attendance rates at school. A bracket was created and hung in the school cafeteria for learners to see, and at the end of the month the class with the least number of absences won a pizza, movie, and snow cone party. Congratulations to Mrs. Wilkes' second grade class for winning!

31st Annual Simplot Teacher of the Year Finalist Jacob Dobson

Please join us in congratulating Simplot Inspirational Teacher of the Year finalist, Jacob Dobson. Mr. Dobson teaches 4th grade at Wilcox Elementary School.

This year, the Simplot Education Council received 2,377 nominations for 398 teachers in Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25. Finalists will be featured daily through Thursday, May 9, 2024. Three Simplot Inspirational Teacher Awards will be announced on Friday, May 10, 2024 – one for a teacher at the elementary, middle and high school levels. In addition, 5 finalists have been selected for each category and each will be awarded a $100 check. The Simplot Inspirational Teacher Award Recipients of 2024 will each be presented a $500 check on behalf of the Council.

“I'm nominating my son's teacher Jacob Dobson from Wilcox Elementary. He has been an amazing teacher to my son. He has worked really hard to help my son do better in school. Has made him want to work harder and do better. He has taken the time to come up with a point system with him. So if he gets all his points in that week he gets extra playing or gets a treat or something like that. It has made him want to do better. I honestly don't think my son would be doing this well if it wasn't for Mr. Dobson. He is honestly the best teacher my son has had and honestly the only one that actually cares about him doing better instead of just putting him in a corner. My son has picked up his scores in his ISTATION testing that's all to do with Mr. Dobson. Mr. Dobson has definitely gone the extra mile to help my son. He even messages me whenever I have questions about how he's doing and he gets right back to he doesn't care that I message him or even when I need to call to ask questions. I truly wish there were more teachers like him. If I could keep my son in his class for the rest of the time he is in school I would. My son enjoys going to his class every day before Mr. Dobson didn't want to go to school so I completely think Mr. Dobson deserves this award. I have talked to many parents and they all love him and believe the same thing I do. He's a wonderful teacher. Thank you.” Heather B. - Parent

Dungeons and Dragons Club

This school year, Wilcox's wonderful librarian, Ms. Chella has created an after school Dungeons and Dragons club open to learners and staff of all skill levels to learn and play. The club is already so popular that we have started a waitlist for learners wanting to join.

There are many benefits for your child in playing a collaborative, role playing game such as D&D. These types of games encourage and support:

  • Creativity and storytelling
  • Vocabulary development and active listening
  • Teamwork and problem solving skills
  • Social-emotional skills
  • Basic math skills

Wilcox Science Fair & STEM Night

Wilcox hosted our annual science fair and family STEM night. Student science projects were judged throughout the day and prizes were awarded and displayed during our STEM night. Learners also got to participate in a STEM activity in their classroom, before enjoying some pizza and getting to take home a STEM at-home activity book.

It was great to see so many Wilcox learners and families participate in our great event!
